The Awards are an industry supported initiative intended to highlight and reward the very best in nature tourism who are leading the way in Indian subcontinent wilderness destinations. Each in their own way are pioneering new ways to support and inspire wildlife conservation, engage local communities and help restoration of wildlife habitat through their vision, drive and actions.

TOO MANY TIGERS?!

Too many tigers. Sorry did I hear that correctly? Once more ‘Too many tigers in many tiger reserves now.’ says tiger expert, Dr Qamar Qureshi.

This is not my assessment (but I have undoubtedly worried about just this prognosis over the last few years) but the conclusion of the esteemed research scientists at the Wildlife Institute of India earlier last month.

In my view our problem is not too many tigers, but vanishing forests outside our protected areas!

TOURISM, THE ROPE THAT BINDS

"India is a multi-destination country with a variety of tourist attractions and facilities. It is the second largest net foreign exchange earner by way of invisible exports. Tourism creates more jobs than any other sector for every rupee invested. It has a major role in promoting large-scale employment opportunities. "

I was on the river in the wildlife-rich Tale Valley Sanctuary in Arunachal Pradesh on August 1, 2001 on an official site visit to the Subansiri on behalf of the Indian Board for Wildlife. I was investigating claims by the promoters of the Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Project that "no threatened plants or animals existed in the Lower Subansiri Valley."
